The Psychology of Love and God’s Design
I want to remind you of something both science and faith agree on: love is not just a feeling—it is a choice, a discipline, and a gift. From psychology, we know that love has three essential components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy is the bond of friendship and trust, passion is the spark of attraction, and commitment is the decision to remain faithful even when emotions waver. Research shows that couples who nurture all three are more resilient, healthier, and happier. From Catholic natural theology, we see that this design is not accidental. Love reflects the very nature of God, who is a communion of persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Marriage is meant to mirror that divine communion: a total gift of self, faithful and fruitful. When you give yourselves to each other, you participate in God’s creative love.Science tells us that acts of kindness, gratitude, and forgiveness literally rewire the brain, strengthening bonds and reducing stress. Theology tells us that these same acts are virtues—habits of love that sanctify your marriage. In other words, the psychology of love and the theology of love are speaking the same truth: love grows when it is practiced. So here’s the encouragement:
- Choose love daily. Not just when it feels easy, but especially when it feels hard.
- Practice small acts of kindness. They build intimacy and trust.
- Remember your “yes.” Commitment is not a chain, but a freedom—the freedom to love without fear.
- See your marriage as a vocation. It is not only about your happiness, but about becoming a living sign of God’s love in the world.
